Blue Plaque mugs

The Blue Plaque installed on buildings commemorates many famous individuals who have lived and worked in London. The Blue Plaques were first erected in London in 1867 by the Royal Society of Arts and this tradition has continued over the years.  The Blue Plaque scheme was taken over by English Heritage in 1986 and more than twelve a year have been installed since that date.  In total there are about 700 official plaques most of them with blue and white lettering although local authorities and private individuals have erected their own plaques most notably the City of London’s rectangular blue plaques and Westminster City Council’s green plaques.
