The Outer Limits – Beyond Zone 1 Poster Competition

Enid Marx Shield DesignThe poster competition, which celebrates life in the Capital and destinations that lie beyond central London, had such an exceptionally high level of entries that the 20 most outstanding designs are to be exhibited at the London Transport Museum (19th September – 9th October 2009) but are also being offered for sale online so everyone has an opportunity to choose their favourite poster.  The selection of the 20 posters includes anthropomorphic representations of pub names in Hackney, an Art Nouveau influenced view of the urban skyline from Primrose Hill, and a witty take on London’s green belt.

The winning design, London Lidos by Alex Jeffries,  highlights a popular urban recreation that is not widely promoted, and the minimalist design invites the viewer to dive right into the cool water. The second prize went to Christian Statham’s image of Herne Hill Velodrome a contemporary cycling team ride in formation against a backdrop reminiscent of 1920s poster design and the third prize was Daniel Norris’s witty poster The Best Bits which uses a doughnut to communicate that London has so much more to offer than the central zone and famous London landmarks.

The Outer Limits competition has demonstrated that posters still remain a vital means of communication and that Transport for London’s transport network has continued to provide a platform for cutting edge poster design for over 100 years.
